why internet marketing

  1. Nick – Appreciate the post. But to clarify, I said nothing of the sort. What I said is that *eventually* Facebook will no longer be a viable *primary* marketing channel for startups. To quote: "Don't get me wrong – Facebook is still a fantastic channel, but for a newcomer, especially for a newcomer trying to make a mark in a category already dominated by an incumbent (e.g., social gaming) it will never have the same efficacy it had back in 2007. " I would be pretty surprised if you didn't agree with that.

  2. I agree with you, that Facebook is very much a huge pool of opportunity for startups, and especially social media ones. It very well could have lost appeal in some ways, but as the platform expands, it gains other benefits.

For example, http://www.colorwarfare.com is a social news startup that puts the spin of group competitions into posting to Facebook and Twitter, and ranks posts based on social engagement from both networks. That means, when you post, it pushes through to both social networks, getting more face time as it enters the news feeds and tweet streams.

  5. Great response.

I can see where Sarah was coming from in regards to the phasing out of Facebook, but for now Facebook is the best platform for communicating. Moreover, Facebook also has many advantages that previous social networks do not have like access to a more knowledgable, internet engaged consumer base.

    Thanks for the post

  6. Nick, you are so right. Facebook is still an incredibly powerful platform, and will continue to be so as long as people use it. There is just no better way to accurately target people who would be interested in your product/service/content.

My company, Unicorn Booty, is the perfect case study. Facebook was originally our main marketing channel, and coupled with steady commitment to it, we have blossomed to over 42,000 followers on Facebook. And, as a content platform, it drives a staggering amount of traffic to our content! And, compared to other channels, it costs nothing for a huge return.

My business would not have achieved such growth in less than a year if it hadn't been for the Facebook platform and the ease of finding people that would love what we do.

And again, as long as people use Facebook, it will continue being a powerful tool for those with less-than-stellar marketing budgets to gain significant traction.
